What Is C-TPAT?

The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program was created after 9/11 to improve U.S. security. In this voluntary partnership, U.S. Customs and Border Protection works in close cooperation with importers, carriers, consolidators, licensed customs brokers and manufacturers to heighten cargo security.

At a Glance

  • Established in 2001
  • Currently includes more than 11,000 partners who account for over 52% of cargo imported into the U.S. (measured by value)
  • Partners voluntarily agree to protect the supply chain, identify security gaps, and implement security measures and best practices
  • There are no fees for this program
  • Members earn C-TPAT certification through supplying documents that demonstrate that they have identified and reduced security risks through their international supply chain. Through this certification, CBP considers these companies “low risk” and, therefore, partners in this program are more likely to experience expedited cargo processing.
  • Partners are actively involved in helping decrease the risk of terrorism
  • Benefits include being able to better ascertain your own security vulnerabilities, reduced number of CBP examinations, front of the line inspections, shorter wait time at the border, and access to FAST (Fast and Secure Trade) lanes at land borders
